Rockin’ the Rockstar

Chanced upon the new store by Soon Lee after watching UP in 3-D (*Squirrel!*). Rockstar by Soon Lee stocks girly sneakers, comfortable dresses, cotton cushions, notebooks by Birds & Co and etc. Very nice!

Hello Belle. Hello Boo.

I take time out of my depressive episodes to find delight in belle & boo’s pretty prints. They have a blog too.

Oh Sweet Sale

pic from www.epiloguepages.com

The GSS is upon us. Save us! Tried as I might, I still couldn’t help staring at the four-letter word whenever it is propped up on store shelves, in all fonts and colours. But I’m surviving. As long as I don’t go anywhere near Orchard, where no fruit tree ever grows.

Instead, I’m buying bread. You have no idea how therapeutic bread-buying (along with clearing cat poo) is. Mulling over the offerings fresh out of the oven, baked crisp or soft with powdered hands. Should I get the cranberry scone (just watch butter melt on it!), the boring sugar doughnut, mini picks of fruit tarts and almond croissants …or just a plain loaf of wholewheat bread? Sweet temptation, best savoured with a cup of hot tea in front of the tv.

If I have a home of my own, I’ll invest in a hardy (and pretty) breadbox. A wooden one that slides open to reveal bread that’ll feed a family of four. Cupboards stocked with berry jam and orange marmalade. A yellow toaster with a smiley popping welcomes into your face. If I have children, I’ll raise them on bread. Wholewheat. Multi-grain. The best thing in the world.

Not Enough

Ok so I know I really shouldn’t shop and spend, but the cravings get to me at times. Like yesterday, after packing a contact into a cab, I actually nonchalantly dropped out of the queue and scooted back into Accessorize for a quick pokearound. Oh what bliss! Bags! Earrings! Trinkets! Hairbands – I don’t even like hairbands! But wow!

In the ten minutes I was inside, I happily picked up a pair of dusted gold studs, ocean-blue enamel bangles and a sepia brown bag I really love. Really. This impulse buying addiction is real scary and I blame all the fashion mags I’ve been reading. But at least I didn’t chalk it up on credit!I really want to stop. But I can’t. Because I just saw this Topshop belted dress with pleats in Female mag. And I’m thinking of the Ellybeth party dress from Wiksten-made. And all those stuff from Zouk Flea & Easy on Sunday.

Meanwhile I’m trying to eat more fruits. Cantaloupe slices on workdays, Granny Smith apple cubes on weeknights and occasionally, dragonfruits in front of the telly. Yum. On to better skin!

So cute! And while we’re woofing away, Red Dog by Louis De Bernieres is absolutely fantastic.

Tova Top

Tova top, Wiksten-made

After what seemed like eons, the Wiksten shop is finally open again. But for now, there’s only – I really shouldn’t use the word “only” – the Tova Top, and it’ll be on sale from Fri. Dec. 14, at 2:00 PM (CST).

The announcement was all I could think about all through an interview, which means I left out some important questions. *smacks self* But what I really really love is the Tova dress. (please make more Jenny Gordy!). And while I’m at it, maybe the Ellybeth dress too. Such torment it is to wait.

Fash Bash Is Back

sketch-girl22.jpg

Fash Bash’s back! This time, there’s close to 50 fabulous stalls of local fashion and jewellery designers & retailers, and fashionistas selling pre-loved branded apparel, bags and accessories! Over 70% of the stalls are new, but I’m dying to check out the regulars like Swirl, Tan Tan, Lile Aux Ashby, Dustbunny Vintage, Granny’s Day Out etc.

The last time I was there, I tried on half a dozen tops, applied water-soluble mascara and bought a Tan Tan little golden birdie brooch! But I totally missed the goodie bag giveaway, which made me very very sad. There’ll be 400 goodie bags up for grabs on Sat, with 200 of them containing SJP’s Covet fragrances. True shopaholics can log on to www.fash-bash.com for detailed floor plan to map out shopping strategies.

Fash Bash

It’s A Pass!

tt-145.jpg

*Proud-Mummy Mode* Starkey passed his temperament test! It’s part of the requirement before he can become a PAT dog under Therapy Dogs Singapore. He came when called (+), snapped at a Golden Retriever (-) shivered in the presence of a German Shepherd (-) and allowed a “patient” to cuddle him roughly without biting (+).

So we went out and got him a Tou Tou carrier bag from Pet Safari so he can ride in a cab to those hospital/home visits. He didn’t seem too pleased to spend his Saturday that way, what’s with tests, dog bags and baths. But with all those beetles he chomped down, he better start doing some volunteer work to gain some karma points.

Wednesday

joanna newsom
Joanna Newsom

For inexplicable reasons I’ve been feeling dreadfully tired lately. Maybe it’s the hovering in between of nowhere – neither moving forward, nor falling backward. My mind is, thankfully, filled with thoughts of writing possibilities, should the plum position fall into my lap. Other than that nothing. I walk, I shop, I write badly, I wait for news. Starkey’s such a tremendous source of joy it actually breaks my heart to have to leave him every morning to sit in my father’s car, fending off questions, remembering how I went mad, why I left home. Then I snap and scream. In the car, and cry, until I grab my morning latte from the bistro. That reassuring warmth of normalcy.

Fotologue, Not Flickr

fotologue

Forget Flickr for a bit. A friend directed me to this nifty, pretty photo-sharing site that’s completely done in Flash. Go check it out on Fotologue. It goes well with Joanna Newsom in the background and a dash of sadness.

Nov Lov

perfect pencils

When the Pirate and I dated, we spent a fair amount of time at Booksactually: scanning bookspines, flipping pages of Moleskines, chatting with the ever-friendly Kenny and Karen over cups of tea, sat cross-legged and watched dramatised readings of this and that…I have such fond memories of the little bookshop that I find it difficult to imagine that it won’t be at Telok Ayer by the middle of next year. :(

So I guess some long overdue shopping is in order. And simply because it is my birth month (oh the gloomiest, monsoon-liest month of the year!), I don’t need a reason to tell Kenny that yes, reserve a blue LEGO thumbdrive for me, please!

Lego Brick Memory Sticks, S$95, email booksellers@booksactually.com

And since I’m at it, I’m grabbing Doris Lessing’s The Golden Notebook (S$23.90) too! And also one of those perfect pencils with writers’ names on them; I want Sylvia Plath (S$2.50)! Maybe some proper writing might flow out of that.

Going Wild

Jacqueline Two-toned Jacket

A heartbreak is a perfect excuse to shop. You grab, you examine, you buy. All logical sense gets shut out at the sliding glass doors. So, utterly inspired by Smitten, it’s shopping spree Saturday. In her lovely showroom in Kuo Chuan Avenue, Alexia from Tskye recounted how her dog Scout chased down the Pirate’s car the last time we were there as she daintily wrapped up the Jacqueline Two-toned Jacket. At Parkway (2nd on my Fave Shopping Centre list), I splurged on a Novo bag, a Chanel lipstick birthday gift and an Earthbath shampoo for Starkey… *gosh* come to think of it, it doesn’t seem like much after all!
